A Photo Of The Sequel Phono Stages

Creek Audio has always been a fan of the vinyl disc. For those consumers who have an interest in enjoying this alternative source of high quality music, there are few amplifiers available today equipped to deal with this as standard. All Creek integrated amplifiers have been designed to accept plug-in Phono modules to enable vinyl reproduction.

The latest Creek plug-in Phono, called Sequel is designed to match a wide range of MM and MC cartridges and can be fitted to the latest integrated amps from Creek, namely the Evo 2, EVOLUTION 5350 and Destiny 2.

The module must be fitted inside the amp, in a slot that will change the Auxiliary Line input into a Phono input, so either the supplying dealer, or the user, must fit the Phono pre-amp before it can be used.

The circuitry cannot be switched for MM or MC so the correct module must be chosen to match the cartridge fitted on the turntable. The EVOLUTION amp's display will automatically show Disc, when the amp is fitted with the Plug-in module and selected for that input.

Sequel 40

The Sequel 40 MM Phono pre-amp is the standard device which is suitable for most medium output Moving Magnet Phono cartridges. It is a two stage circuit and uses high-grade, NE5532 low-noise, integrated circuits to amplify the signal. The 75us RIAA de-emphasis is performed passively following the first gain stage and is directly coupled without capacitors to block DC, for a clearer sound.

A separate DC servo circuit blocks DC and rolls-off low frequencies below 1 Hz. There is no rumble filter in this design. A second gain stage boosts the level up to 40dB and uses active feedback for 318 and 3180us de-emphasis using high-grade close tolerance components.

The entire circuit is powered from a dedicated supply from the integrated amplifier, but uses high grade LM317 and LM337 adjustable voltage regulators set for +/-15V operation. This filters noise from the main amplifier and allows the Phono pre-amp to have the highest possible overload margin.

Specification

  • Gain 100 (40 dB)
  • Frequency Response 20 Hz to 20 kHz +/- 0.25 dB
  • Signal to Noise Ratio - 83 dB
  • Total Harmonic Distortion < 0.03%
  • R1AA deviation +/- 0.5%
  • Output 250 mV from 2.5mV input
  • Input Sensitivity / Impedance/ Capacitance - 3.5 mV / 47K Ohm / 220pF
  • Overload Margin 22 dB
  • Suitable for medium to high output MM cartridges in the range of 3.5 mV - 5 mV output

Sequel 48

The Sequel 48 MM Phono pre-amp is the special device which is suitable for low output Moving Magnet Phono cartridges or high output MC types. It is a two stage circuit and uses high-grade, Analog Device OP275 low-noise, integrated circuits to amplify the signal. The 75us RIAA de-emphasis is performed passively following the first gain stage and is directly coupled without capacitors to block DC, for a clearer sound.

A separate DC servo circuit blocks DC and rolls-off low frequencies below 1 Hz. There is also no rumble filter in this design.

  • Gain 250 (48 dB)
  • Frequency Response 20 Hz to 20 kHz +/- 0.25 dB
  • Signal to Noise Ratio - 83 dB
  • Total Harmonic Distortion < 0.03%
  • R1AA deviation +/- 0.5%
  • Output 250 mV from 1mV input
  • Input Sensitivity / Impedance/ Capacitance - 1 mV / 47K Ohm / 220pF
  • Overload Margin 22 dB
  • Suitable for high output MC or low output MM cartridges in the range of 0.9mV -2 mV output

Sequel 54

The Sequel 54 MC Phono pre-amp is the standard device which is suitable for most medium output Moving Coil Phono cartridges. It is a two stage circuit and uses high-grade, Analog Devices OP275 low-noise, integrated circuits to amplify the signal.

N.B. Due to the very large size of transformer inside the EVOLUTION 5350 and the magnetic field it generates, it is not advised to use the Sequel 54 as a higher level of low frequency noise will be heard.

Specification

  • Gain 500 (54dB)
  • Frequency Response 20 Hz to 20 kHz +/- 0.25 dB
  • Signal to Noise Ratio - 75 dB
  • Total Harmonic Distortion MC < 0.05%
  • R1AA deviation +/- 0.5%
  • Output level 250 mV from 0.5mV input
  • Input Sensitivity / Impedance/ Capacitance - 0.5 mV / 1000 Ohm / 3300 pF
  • Overload Margin MM 22 dB
  • Suitable for medium output cartridges in the range of 0.5 mV - 1 mV output

Please note: The Sequel Phono pre-amp cannot be fitted to the original Destiny 1 integrated amp, because the connections on the pre-amp 1 are unique and it had the special Destiny Phono pre-amp made for it only.

The Sequel Phono modules can also be used to enable vinyl input on current and older Creek amplifiers including the following:

Destiny 2 integrated amp
Evolution 2 integrated amp
Evolution 5350 integrated amp

Classic 5350SE Integrated amp
5350SE, 5350R and 5350 Integrated amps
5250,5250R and 5250SE integrated amps
4330 and 4330SE Integrated amps, but not mk2 versions.
4240 and 4240SE Integrated amps
P42 Pre-amp

A50i, A50iR, 4330mk2 and 4330SE mk2 can only use the single supply EVOLUTION MM and MC Phono, which is now out of production. Creek and its distributors still have some stocks available.
